This year, Makrab was held in Cave Hill Creek, a beautiful place in Beaufort smack-dab in the middle of lush greens and clear lakes. Our members were supposed to meet up on Saturday, 17th of September, 8:00 am sharp in front of Wilson Hall; we were supposed to embark by bus at that time. As expected, all our members gathered only one hour after the appointed time. All in good fun.

The trip to Cave Hill Creek was a long two-and-a-half hours. It may even be slightly awkward, as some of our members were not yet familiar with the others. No matter, Makrab would melt the awkwardness like butter. We started with introductions the moment we arrived and moved on with games – fun, fun games, that had people laughing and smeared with make-up and potato chip crumbs on their faces. There was a cooking duel and a talent show, both of which relighted the competitive spirit of members and brought out hidden talents: who knew our members could cook so well? And who knew how well some of us could sing, dance, act?

It’s sad, but every good thing has to come to an end. We returned on Sunday, 18th of September, and this time the bus ride was filled with endless chatter. There is a fond saying: “Pergi malu-malu, pulang malu-maluin,” (leave shy, return shameless) and this embodies Makrab perfectly. It is certain that this moment will be one of the fondest memories in our members’ minds.

Melbourne University’s Open Day was held on 21st of August. Naturally, PPIA held a stand selling a variety of Indonesian foods, including Mie Ayam and Martabak, a type of Indonesian pancake. At $5 per bowl, and $2 each respectively, our items were being sold very quickly. It was a beautiful day, to boot; Melbourne University’s South Lawn was positively packed with people from every imaginable nationality.

From 12 to 3 our members continued circulating the South Lawn, carrying posters and promoting our items. Our stand was rife with shouts of “Martabak-nya mana?!” or “Delicious Indonesian noodles and pancakes!!”. The Bakso Goreng, or fried meatball, unfortunately arrived late, but as soon as it arrived it started selling like hot cakes in frozen winter; which, for the idiomatically-challenged, means to be extremely popular with customers.

By late noon the sun was shining golden on the South Lawn’s fields, and the people congregating there became a mass of refreshment-seeking zombies. Thankfully, we had cold Teh Kotak – sweetened iced tea with a characteristic taste of Indonesia – naturally, it was very popular (even among our own sellers!).

All in all, it was an exciting afternoon; where else can you get that Martabak you’ve been longing for since you arrived in Melbourne? For Indonesian students, our stand provided a little bit of the taste of home.

May 1st, 2011 marked one of the biggest nights of the year for PPIA Unimelb. The long-awaited Indonesian cultural night that we all have been working on for almost a year before was finally here, and it was here to showcase some of Indonesia’s biggest talents. Some of these included but were not limited to: the winning band from PPIA Unimelb’s own-hosted Melbourne New Talent Show, Balawan and Batuan Ethnic Fusion, a number of traditional dances performed by Sanggar Lestari, and last but not least, Maliq & D’Essentials.

That night Melbourne Convention Centre found itself bursting with life, music and laughter. It was a night that were not to be easily, if ever, forgotten.

PPIA Unimelb is proud and ever so grateful to announce that every single ticket was sold out on the day of the event. Thank you for your participation and support, and may we look forward to Et Cetera 2012!
